Fixing a gas leak in your fireplace

Thompson Handy Service | more than 2 weeks ago

What should you do when you suspect that your fireplace is leaking gas? Here are some tips that can help:

  • If you want to make sure your fireplace is indeed leaking gas, you can buy one of those gas detectors from Home Depot or Lowes. They cost roughly $50. However, you can often save your money by calling your gas company. Simply let them know of your problem and they’ll send someone to house right away. In the state of Washington, this service is free. However, a gas leak report is treated as an emergency and so make sure there’ll be someone at the house waiting or else the gas company will turn off your main gas valve until someone can let them into the house. If they indeed find a problem with the fireplace and the problem can be fixed by adjusting fireplace settings, they’ll often make the adjustments for free.

Hope this helps. Live a safe and happy life!

Thanks for posting! I’ve just called my gas company and they’ll be at my house soon to check out the leak.
